History
The Sons and Daughters of Ireland is an Irish heritage organization which was created in 1969. The first organizational meeting was held at the Holiday Hotel by the river. Charter members represented some of the more prominent Irishmen in the area: Jake Lawlor of the University of Nevada athletic and coaching fame; Ty Cobb, well known Journalist; Bob McDonald, attorney and Democratic Party politico; Charlie Springer, Nevada Supreme Court Justice; Bob Sullivan, Treasurer, prominent in Valley Bank of Nevada (now Bank of America); and about thirty-five other Irish enthusiasts.
Activities
We use every opportunity to promote the essence of Irish heritage, especially as it pertains to Northern Nevada. Each year we chose the Irishmen or Irishwoman of the year. We join with the Clampers in dedication to the many Irish miners who were responsible for Virginia City and who helped to rebuild San Francisco. We have dedicated a monument at St. Patrick's Grove, Rancho San Rafael.
